Don’t Put Your Dreams Away

A love song for the hopeful

This song offers a look at some of the indomitable traits across generations that we can draw on as we work for social change. These traits of imagination, idealism, and enthusiasm span generations and support us in working with a sense of intention, commitment, resilience, and hope. We are offered these different generational perspectives with appreciation, and as a tool for encouragement.

Don’t Put Your Dreams Away

Lyrics:

Here’s to the little ones who
think they can touch the sun and
ride on the moon to the stars.
Tell them no one can fly,
and they may fall when they try,
but they’ll never put their wings away.
They will never put their wings away.

Here’s to the older ones
who think they can right the wrongs and
cradle the earth in their hands.
Tell them it takes too long,
and tell them that all hope is gone,
but they won’t put their dreams away.
They will never put their dreams away.

Follow the spirit, follow the spirit,
Follow the spirit, follow the spirit…

Here’s to the eldest ones who
think they’ll still weather storms and
rise above clouds in their minds.
Tell them that life’s all pain,
we come and go like drops of rain,
but they won’t put their joy away.
They will never put their joy away

Follow the spirit, follow the spirit,
Follow the spirit, follow the spirit…

Don’t you let them put your joy away.
Don’t you ever put your dreams away.
May they never put their wings away.
May they never put their wings away.

Reflect and Practice

This song is a kind of gift or love song for the hopeful — in the particular challenges of our own generations — to be relentless in our hopes toward a healed world, even when they may feel impractical. We cannot reach our goals without believing they are possible.

We invite you to bring this song with you as a tool of encouragement and to share it with others.

How do you receive and offer encouragement in your relationships?
